From March 1, 2022, a ban on the fragrance Lilial will be in force

Whether powdery, oriental, or even tart – who doesn't like it when cosmetic products smell pleasant? Consumers are particularly fond of light, floral fragrances such as lily of the valley. The fragrance Lilial is responsible for this. Accordingly, it is frequently found in a wide variety of products – from shower gels to classic soaps and creams. But with effect from March 1, 2022, its use in cosmetic products will be banned.

Lilial is a synthetic fragrance and is indicated on cosmetic products with the designation ‘butylphenyl methylpropional’ according to INCI (International Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients). This fragrance is not only used in cosmetic products, but also found in a wide variety of detergents, fabric softeners and cleaning products.

Classification as allergenic and toxic for reproduction

Like many other fragrances, Lilial has allergenic properties. This is especially so for people with a contact allergy, thereby its presence in cosmetics, care and cleaning products can be a concern. However, the risk of an allergic reaction is not the only reason for the ban that is now coming into force.

This is because Lilial also exhibits properties that are harmful to reproduction. Thus, in the CLP Regulation and through the publication of Regulation (EU) 2021/1902 in the Official Journal of the European Union, its classification as toxic to reproduction Repr. Cat. 1B, with hazard statement H360Fd “May impair fertility. Suspected of damaging the unborn child”.

Ban on sale by amending the Cosmetics Regulation (EU) 2021/1902

Because of the ban on butylphenyl methylpropional, cosmetic products containing Lilial may no longer be offered for sale within the European Union from March 1, 2022.
