Identification of foreign bodies in food

  • ATR technique to identify the type of polymer and the nature of additives, e.g. plasticisers in the case of homogeneous materials
  • EDX for identification of glass particles, metallic or mineral foreign bodies or other mainly inorganic particles, identification of elements from atomic number 5 (boron), quantification from atomic number 11 (sodium)
  • SEM and TEM images for determination of foreign body microstructure
  • X-ray fluorescence analysis or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for elemental composition analysis
  • Biomolecular analysis in case of animal or plant fragments, either via species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP).
