Compostability tests & technical support

We test packaging and/or products to determine their suitability for composting. In addition, we provide you with advice before your project begins.

  1. The WESSLING GreenLab: a laboratory entirely dedicated to compostability tests. We are certified by TÜV AUSTRIA (OK HOME Compost, OK INDUSTRIAL Compost and Seedling) and DIN CERTCO.
  2. Performance of the 4 stages of the test according to the standards:
  • NF T51-800 (2015): Plastics suitable for home composting 
  • NF EN 13432: Plastics suitable for industrial composting
 

What tests are used to determine if a product is compostable?

01 Identification and chemical characterisation of product components

The constituents and physical characteristics of the product must be determined.

02 Biodegradation of the product

Determination of the product's capacity to be consumed by an appropriate microbial flora, via the conversion of organic carbon into carbon dioxide.

03 Disintegration of the product

Determination of the physical fragmentation of the product during composting.

04 Ecotoxicity test

Determination of the quality of the compost resulting from disintegration. Verification that there is no risk of residues of the product tested to human health, animal health and the environment.

Testing of consumer products

Emissions of volatile pollutants from construction products, coatings, paints and varnishes must be indicated on product labels. We carry out the necessary tests in our test chambers.

  • Tests and analyses accredited to EN ISO 17025,
  • Customised tests on raw materials,
  • Olfactory tests,
  • Evaluation of results according to: AFSSET protocol and decree n°2011-321,
  • Preparation and assistance in obtaining various certificates and recognised labels, 
  • Advice on product quality,
  • Control of purchased products and/or validation of new buildings,
  • Quality management in production,
  • Test reports in several languages (optional).

Combustion emission tests (VOC)

  • Analysis of emissions in a test chamber (1m3 and at set parameters: temperature, humidity, oxygen level and air change),
  • Depending on the VOCs tested: sampling on a Tenax tube and analysis by GC-MS or sampling on a silica-DNPH tube and analysis by HPLC,
  • Tests and analyses carried out in accordance with NF EN 16738,
  • Test report written in several languages (optional),
  • Our laboratory is accredited to ISO 17025.
